Handling SMS delivery receipts
mobiForge
Recently, we looked at how to send SMS messages using a standard HTTP POST-based API. As was intimated at the time, most APIs also allow you to process delivery receipts for the messages you send. This allows you to determine the status of the message, i.e. delivered, failed, expired etc. Let's take a look at how this all works.

goMobi content mobilization platform from dotMobi adds new features
dotMobi
Due to developer demand, new features launched, joining existing designer-specific
goMobi features for adapting Web content into mobile-ready sites more easily than ever

DUBLIN, Sept. 1, 2010 ? dotMobi, a worldwide leader in the development & discovery of quality mobile content and the company behind the .mobi Internet domain, today announced additional "requested by developers" features for goMobi?, the world?s first content mobilization platform ? a hybrid of a traditional content management system and a practically automatic mobile website builder.

In a recent dotMobi survey conducted by Human Factors International, 94% of developers in the USA, India, Germany and China felt that the mobile Web represents an untapped market for small businesses. Based on this and additional survey findings, dotMobi has quickly integrated features that developers noted as being especially useful in serving small businesses with mobile websites, including new transcoding options plus "Quick Site Copy" and "Add Pages" features.

goMobi now allows designers to fully control the transformation of existing website content into mobile-friendly content. This means developers can produce compelling mobile content in minutes while minimizing maintenance time because changes to the source website can be automatically rendered on the goMobi site. Also, goMobi now incorporates automatic transcoding of subpages within a desktop site for a seamless mobile user experience.

The goMobi "Quick Site Copy" feature lets developers rapidly reproduce goMobi sites for similar business types without having to recreate work. This means developers can save time and money by creating templates for clients with like needs, such as nightclubs or law offices. The "Add Pages" feature makes it easy to create an unlimited number of additional goMobi pages for flexibility in creating unique mobile websites.

"Since its launch in June, goMobi has been warmly received by both our sales channel and our target audiences of Web developers and small-to-medium businesses (SMBs). These new features ensure that goMobi continues to be a fast, easy and complete solution for developers and designers, as well as meeting the needs of SMBs and Web services companies who serve these audiences," said Trey Harvin, CEO, dotMobi.

For information on how registrars, Web services & hosting companies, and developers & designers can offer goMobi to their customers, please contact sales@goMobi.info.

Details on setting up your goMobi mobile website are at http://goMobi.info (on desktops) and at http://go.mobi (on mobile devices).

Why doesn?t the Apple App Store give download figures? Would the truth be unAPPetizing? ...
mobiThinking
There?s no doubt that some companies do really well with download apps for smartphones. The question every potential app publisher should ask is: will we?

The most used apps across all smartphones ? note that?s used as opposed to downloaded ? in the US according to Nielsen, are Facebook, Google Maps and The Weather Channel (TWC).

What is a Web-based mobile application or Web app? Here?s expert opinion from the W3C
mobiThinking
Of late there has been some media hype around mobile apps. This has led to a somewhat distorted and narrow picture of mobile apps, which doesn?t help any business make an informed choice about mobile strategy. If you believe mobile apps is the right path for your business, then you need to consider all smartphone platforms (including the 85 percent that are not Apple), if not all handsets (including the 97 percent that are not Apple). And you must consider Web-based mobile applications or Web apps as well as native apps.

Global mobile stats: all latest quality research on mobile Web and marketing
mobiThinking

UPDATE August 13, 2010: Adds Facebook mobile stats and Amazon m-commerce income.

UPDATE June 22, 2010: New research on mobile messaging and how people use their cell phones.

UPDATE May 17, 2010: New section on mobile financial services and mobile payments.

The mobiThinking compendium of mobile statistics and research
The stats, all the stats and nothing but the stats?
In the past two years, we have gone from a smattering of mobile statistics to an abundance of useful information. But there's still a long way to go, there are still huge gaps in our knowledge, some countries enjoy a proliferation of data sources, while others have little or none; and the quality of statistics varies incredibly. As telecoms regulators and industry associations start to collect and share meaningful data, things will only get better.

An unfortunate side effect of the media?s recent surge of enthusiasm for mobile in the past year is a tendency to highlight data of dubious quality (often when better is available), and/or widespread misunderstanding, misreporting and failure to qualify figures they have cherry-picked. This isn't just misleading and confusing, it's damaging. If brands are persuaded by hype to divert funds into niche, ill-thought-through mobile projects and then get burnt, the whole mobile business suffers.

This stats compendium ? to which we plan regular updates and additions - will hopefully go some way to putting right some of the sins of the last year. But please remember that even the best quality independent statistics are speculative to some degree ? stats are not facts.

Thanks to all the analysts, associations and regulators that continue to send us their research.

The open market approach: Q&A with GetJar, the No1 independent app store
mobiThinking
The more you learn about independent app stores like GetJar, the harder it is too understand why Apple's App Store receives all the media attention. While Apple's ? for obvious reasons ? restricts the target market to Apple handsets (i.e. about 2-3 percent of mobile handsets), GetJar features downloads for all sorts of feature phones ? the majority of handsets ? and smartphones. All the top performing apps work on multiple types of handsets.
